The forecast this for weekend on the coast was stormy weather and high surf warnings. Also wind. And thunderstorms. What a perfect time to plan a visit. Maybe some waves would be 50 to 55 feet! Fricken awesome!
This could just be storm froth, but I believe this may still be the foam that is killing the seabirds.
Below is a video of the sea foam. And of us running from it. In the video, I use a naughty word. So kids, go ask your parents before you watch.

The foam was rather unearthly. Giant piles spongey, gelatinous, eggy froth. The wind was blowing hard from the south and pushed the piles of foam north up the beach. Little pieces of the stuff would break off and roll across the sand like little white tumble weeds. The constant wind made the foam undulate and quiver as though it were breathing. The stuff of horror movies.
During high tide, the beach disappeared. The waves came right to our door. Thankfully, we were on the second floor.

This is also a view from our room. You don’t think we actually went anywhere, do you?
Actually we did venture out a number of times. We went out to eat enough times to calculate that every restaurant within 20 miles of Cannon Beach charges $5 to $15 more than they should for what you get on your plate. And most of it is not that great. If you wanted to open a reasonably priced restaurant in Cannon Beach with good food, you’d clean up. Maybe an Italian place would be nice.
Did I mention this the last time we stayed at the coast? We went to Mo’s. Dave and I each ordered salmon. One of us ordered it grilled. The other ordered it fried. They both came out exactly the same. It was amusing. And further, being a New England girl, I can attest that if you have to add a pat of butter when serving your chowder, you are doing something wrong. We see throngs of people beating down the door to that place and we don’t quite get it.
The weather alternated between sideways hail, with thunder and lightning, and then relative calm. We learned there was an actual tornado further down the coast! Crazy!
Later in the day on Saturday, the sun came out.
That foam is super creepy, though.

Hi May. We stayed at the Tolovana Inn. Be sure to ask for an ocean front, not an ocean view room. Maybe the third floor if it’s a big storm!
